It’s been a very busy and short summer for us. With the approaching school year, Katie and I talked about growing our staff so we could continue to produce quality content year-round. I think we both acknowledged that last year we struggled a little to find balance with our full time jobs and regularly posting to our blog. Like we often say, S&S has grown into something more than we ever imagined and we want to continue growing it. After a nationwide search this summer, we are excited to announce the addition of three feature writers, a social media manager and a web manager to our S&S team!
Candace Burton, Web Manager
Candace impressed us immediately when we talked with her. She has a true passion for working with females and is extremely career driven. As a matter of fact, she is set to pursue an MBA/ MS in Sport Management from UMass Amherst this fall after working as an Americorps VISTA Leader with Up2Us Sports. One of the things Candace was passionate about was further developing our Resources page on Sparkles and Sports - a page we have really neglected this past year due to our time constraints. Her main responsibility will be managing our site and producing content for the resources page.
Anastasia Hamilton, Feature Writer
Immediately we knew Anastasia would offer a unique perspective for us. She currently works with the Gwinnett Braves, a minor league affiliate of the Atlanta Braves, as the social media coordinator. Once I found out she was a fellow Jayhawk fan it was a done deal for me. Okay, in all seriousness, the big draw was that she works in the professional sports world, whereas the rest of our writing staff currently works in collegiate athletics. Selfishly, we were thrilled that Anastasia’s off-season was our busy seasons which will obviously help us when it comes to spreading out work throughout the year. Anastasia also has a background in sales which excites us to bring that aspect of the sports industry to Sparkles and Sports as well.
Jen Heisel, Feature Writer
This may come as no surprise to many of you since Jen has been a guest blogger on S&S several times now. A fellow SID, Jen’s knack for finding stories and expressing her personality in her writing style is what made our decision to make her a full-time writer for Sparklesandsports.com a no-brainer. Jen’s entering her third year at San Diego State and has previously worked at Penn State and San Jose State. Jen’s worked as an intern with the the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres and New Jersey Devils, Niagara IceDogs Hockey Club, the NFL’s Buffalo Bills and with the United States Golf Association as a Media Specialist for the US Open. We feel that her broad range of experience will help her continue to tell the story of other females that work in the world of sports.
Kristina Nauman, Feature Writer
Kristina currently works at Penn State as the Assistant Director of Social Media. I won’t lie, at first I was confused as to why she applied to be a feature writer and not for our digital position. But the confusion went away after Katie and I got to speak with her and learn more about her. There’s no doubt that Kristina will do a fantastic job writing for our blog. She’s passionate about empowering other women in our industry and her experiences working at Penn State and as an intern with Under Armour make her a great addition to our team. Plus, she’s a second-degree black belt, how cool is that?
Bridgette Robles, Social Media Manager
Bridgette has all the tools to succeed as our social media manager. She currently works at Missouri State within the athletics communications office as a social media manager and has previously worked at the SWAC conference office. Before transitioning into social media, she worked in the media relations world world at Lewis University, the SEC, George Washington University, Missouri State and with the Springfield Cardinals. Bridgette will help further develop our Sparkles and Sports brand on social media and we are excited to expand beyond our website in order to continue reaching and helping women in the sports industry.
But that’s not all...
Additionally, we felt that this was the right time to rebrand sparklesandsports.com. Our new look which includes a logo will help further establish our visual identity with readers. This is our third rebrand of sparklesandsports.com since we officially launched on June 6, 2016. Our first rebrand took us from a Tumblr site to Wix for housing sparklesandsports.com. Shortly after we developed a new layout for sparklesandsports.com which has been what you’ve seen for the past year. Now as we move into this new era for sparklesandsports.com, we felt a logo design was important for us to launch our official Twitter account, @SparklesSports, in addition to our staff expansion.
