Two weeks ago, I was invited by a coworker to a Women Leaders in College Sports (formerly NACWAA) happy hour hosted by members from Syracuse and Colgate University. I am not a member of WLCS but my coworker said all were welcome so I decided to go. I am relatively still new to Syracuse so I saw it as an opportunity to get to know some of my female coworkers and mix in a few other females from other local universities.
I convinced our postgrad intern to come with me as I found it was a great opportunity for her to network since she will be entering the job market in a couple of weeks.
The majority of the women that attended were employed at Syracuse or Colgate but spanned a large variety of areas we work in. There were coaches, academic coordinators, administrators, and even a group of students that are part of the WISE (Women in Sports and Entertainment) organization on Syracuse’s campus.
I really appreciate that there is a strong base of women in the greater Syracuse area willing to set time aside to meet with others, talk about their careers, job opportunities and spend time mentoring female students interested in our field.
I highly encourage any of our readers to attend a local WLCS happy hour that is happening nearby for you. The experience was great and I am already looking forward to our next one. I am even planning to join the membership now once my roots get a little more planted in Syracuse.
