When you’re working in sports, it’s hard to determine where we need to channel our energy. We need to please our coaches, student-athletes, fans, administrators, media, etc. So, how do we determine to where to best align our energy?
Sarah Knight defines “f*cks” as time + energy + money - your f*ck budget - and that you need to create a f*ck budget to determine what you really need to care about. She suggests that your mind is a barn and inside are all of the things that both bring you joy and annoy you. You have to perform some mental decluttering - impositions on your time, energy and money - and clear out the annoyances to give yourself more space for joy.
Knight suggests that once you figure out what you want to give a f*ck about, use the “not sorry” method: Decide what you don’t give a f*ck about and simply don’t give a f*ck about it. Be honest, polite and don’t be an a**hole, and you’ll be good.
You may always have to deal with difficult coaches, or fans who think they deserve more of your time, or coworkers who don’t pull their weight. But you can choose what else you have to deal with, and how best to spend your f*ckbucks, so do some self-reflecting and balance your f*ckbudget.
