Today is International Day of the Girl. What is that? Well, “Its mission is to ‘help galvanize worldwide enthusiasm for goals to better girls’ lives, providing an opportunity for them to show leadership and reach their full potential.’” Basically, it’s a day to remind people to empower and invest in young girls.
Last year I stumbled upon a program called Girls on the Run and have been coaching a team at my local Boys and Girls Club for about a year now. I volunteer an hour and a half of my time twice a week for about 10 weeks. Most teams actually have quite a few volunteers and only require an hour and a half of your time once a week. The teams are composed of about 15-20 3rd-5th graders. There’s also a program for older girls called Heart and Sole.
This is a program focused on creating happy and healthy girls though running. It doesn’t require a lot of running but at the end of the program there is a 5K.
I move a lot due to my job; Georgia is the third state I’ve lived in for a job and I’m only 25. I like this program because it’s nationwide and it’s the same program from place to place. If I have to move, I know I can join another team with very little adjustment. It’s also an easy program to bring to a new place because there is so much national support.
This is a great way or me to get involved in my local community, plus it has two of my passions wrapped up into one: female empowerment and running!
