The Never-Ending Road

January 10, 2019

“I can’t wait to get home. We’ve been on the road for 14 of the last 22 days.”

Those were the words I whispered to one of my players as we flew in the middle of the night from Minneapolis to Syracuse on Nov. 29. Actually, depending what timezone we were flying over, it might have been Nov. 30.

I tweeted a photo recently that joked about traveling so much you feel like a visitor in your own house. RELATABLE.

I’ve been wearing my last pair of contacts for about two months, there is a steady stream of dishes in my sink and I don’t think I have mopped my kitchen floor in what feels like five months at this point.

I’ve been reading a lot of self-help posts lately to keep myself motivated. Not necessarily for work, since the team I work with motivates me naturally, but in life. There’s nothing better than returning home to a clean room after being on the road for a week. Equally as nice? A clean kitchen. Clutter stresses me out and I try to keep it minimal but eventually it piles up.

The big thing I struggle with while traveling so frequently is simple household tasks, and as I mentioned before, dishes is one of them. With my roommate entering her busy travel season in February I decided to make a “house resolutions” list (suggested by a blog I read and can’t seem to find a link to anymore) and pinned it up to our refrigerator. It’s a daily reminder to keep up with the dishes, laundry, cleaning the house and various other tasks. So far, so good.

From Dec. 18 to Jan. 7 I woke up and fell asleep in my own bed just twice between team travel and the holidays. What did I do the two and a half days that I was home between returning home from Christmas and leaving for our trip to Clemson and Virginia Tech? Cleaned my room and kitchen. Let me tell you, after carrying my 45-pound suitcase up the stairs to my house when we arrived home on Sunday night there was nothing better than suddenly remembering how nice and clean my room was.

I’m not big on year-long New Year’s resolutions but more so on working to correct bad habits. I think this one may stick for a while though…

For those wondering, here’s a list of our house resolutions for 2019:

  • Clean the dishes in the sink every day

  • Take out the trash (and bring it to the curb on Mondays)

  • Do one load of laundry per week

  • Clean the bathroom, especially the toilet

  • Tidy up the living room and dining room

  • Sweep the floors

  • If it snowed, shovel the front of the house and sidewalk

  • Take out the recycling

  • Tidy up your bedroom
