Perception is reality. We’ve all heard this saying before, and most of us know it to be somewhat if not mostly true. But how do those perceptions form, and how much of an effect do they really have on our lives?
One of my favorite podcasts, Invisibilia, explores this idea by discussing how expectations and beliefs can literally shape outcomes. These expectations have a profound impact on our day-to-day lives, both for better and for worse. For example, the expectation we have for a luxury brand probably varies greatly from our expectation of a discount brand. If we have a negative experience with the luxury brand, we are deeply disappointed because we expected better of them. On the other hand, if the value brand lets us down, we’re not as concerned since our expectations of them were much lower.
In our personal lives, expectations may dictate the way we interact with certain family members, coworkers, or friends.
As you watch this video, think about how expectations have influenced some areas of your life. Were those expectations justified, or could they have been misguided? And lastly, ask yourself how you can set expectations to positively shape outcomes.
